A Chronograph is a specific type of watch that is used as a stopwatch function combined with a display watch. The independent sweep second hand can be started, stopped and returned to zero by successive pressure on the stem. Complex chronographs use additional complications and can have multiple independent hands to measure seconds, minutes and hours. A chronograph can serve a specific purpose such as to measure heart rate, calculate average speed or keep track of two events at the same time.
Modern Chronographs have Tachymeter bezels for rapid calculations of speed or distance. A tachymeter measures speed based on time traveled over a fixed distance. The tachymeter scale is to align with the second hand at the start of the length to be measured and used to measure distance by timing the travel over the distance while the speed is held constant.
